California Schools to WatchSTW_Logo

California Schools to Watch (STW) is a state-level program led by the California League of Educators and supported by the California Department of Education (CDE) that identifies and honors middle-grade schools demonstrating excellence in academic engagement, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and collaborative leadership. The program is part of a national initiative that recognizes middle schools implementing high-quality, middle-grades reform practices.

This program identifies model middle-grade schools that are academically engaging, developmentally responsive, socially equitable, and have a culture of collaborative leadership.

The California STW program focuses on schools that exhibit the following four key characteristics:

  • Academically Engaging
    • School that provides a rigorous and inspiring curriculum that keeps students actively involved in learning.
  • Developmentally Responsive
    • Schools that understand and cater to the specific developmental needs of young adolescents.
  • Socially Equitable
    • Schools that ensure all students have equitable opportunities to succeed, providing support for their physical, mental, and social-emotional well-being.
  • Culture of Collaborative Leadership
    • Schools with a culture where leadership is shared and collaborative among staff.

CLMS is unwavering in our commitment to the success and well-being of middle-level students across the state. We recognize that the middle school years are pivotal in a student's academic and personal development, and we are dedicated to providing the support and resources needed to ensure their success.
